FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

NEW TYPE OF RECREATION IN MILLINGTON PARKS

MILLINGTON, TN (April 21, 2017) –Little Free Libraries are popping up all over and Millington is excited to be a part of the global movement.  Millington Arts, Recreation and Parks has partnered with West 10 Newspapers, the Millington Public Library, and the Millington Arts Council to provide Little Free Libraries at Oak, Lions and Aycock Parks.

“I was introduced to Little Free Libraries by Kate Louderback, an industrious high school student, who provided Little Free Libraries in her hometown as part of a school project.  I loved the idea and set up a meeting to learn the ins and outs of Kate’s project,” said Kate Armitage, Director of Millington Arts, Recreation and Parks.  “After that meeting, I started noticing Little Free Libraries everywhere as I traveled and hoped to create a program that would work in the Millington community,” said Armitage.  Special thanks to West 10 Newspapers for donating the newspaper boxes, the Millington Arts Council for designing and painting the Little Free Libraries, the Millington Public Library who will monitor and rotate the collection every two weeks and the Millington Area Chamber of Commerce for hosting the ribbon cutting today.

Little Free Library is a non-profit organization that inspires a love of reading, builds community, and sparks creativity by fostering neighborhood book exchanges around the world.  Through Little Free Libraries, millions of books are exchanged each year, profoundly increasing access to books for readers of all ages and backgrounds.  The organization began in May 2012 and by November 2016 there were Little Free Libraries in all 50 states, more than 70 countries and 50,000 Little Free Library book exchanges around the world.

As official, registered Little Free Libraries, Oak, Lions and Aycock Parks in Millington are included on the world map to help people find and share books wherever they may be in the world.  Recreational reading is fun and good for you.  So when you need a break from the walking trails or playgrounds, grab a book and enjoy some time reading in one of Millington’s beautiful parks.
